Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is a rare condition in which the popliteal artery, a major blood vessel that runs behind the knee, is compressed or constricted by nearby structures such as muscles, tendons, or ligaments.

This resulting reduced blood flow to the lower can cause symptoms such as pain, cramping, numbness, and weakness during exercise or other activities. In severe cases, it can lead to tissue damage or even limb-threatening complications!

The condition typically affects young and active individuals, and early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent long-term complications.

A healthcare provider, such as a Podiatrist may perform a physical examination to check for signs of reduced blood flow to the lower leg, such as pale or cool skin, weak or absent pulses, or muscle wasting. Other tests include an Ankle Brachial index (during exercise), duplex ultrasound, MRI or CT.

The treatment for popliteal artery entrapment syndrome may depend on the severity of the condition and can vary from conservative management to surgical intervention. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

If you have any concerns, or any symptoms similar to the ones described, our team of podiatrists are here to help. Simple give our clinic a call or book online below.
